For certified high school roles, candidates must hold a valid teaching certificate or license issued by a government body in a list of approved countries, including Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and select EU countries.

Teachers from the United Kingdom please note that QTS/QTLS or equivalent experience is required.

Teachers from South Africa please note that a PGCE with high school practicum or equivalent experience is required. SACE registration is not sufficient.

Do I need to be Canadian or hold a British Columbia teaching certificate to teach at MLES? Likely not.

A British Columbia Teaching Certificate is NOT required unless specified, generally for elementary and middle school positions in foreign national schools. The majority of vacancies are in high schools.

Teachers need supervised high school or middle school practicum or student teaching experience of 8-10 weeks. 75-100 days of high school teaching within the last year may be considered as equivalent.

English language teaching candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and a TEFL/TESOL certificate. The TEFL/TESOL certificate is not required if a candidate has two years of teaching experience in a real world classroom, or a degree in education.


A bachelors degree from an accredited university is required. For high school roles, the degree should be in the subject which is being taught. Transcripts will be required.

Non-native speakers – High School Only

Teacher applicants who have completed their high school education in a language other than English, are required to demonstrate a language proficiency in either the TOEFL or IELTS language assessment to meet the following standard:

Qualified applicants must hold a passport from an English speaking country or locale which is recognized by the government of China.
